Summary
When a fox drinks an old woman's milk from her pail she chops off his tail. In order to get his tail back, she asks him to bring her some milk to replace what he drank. The fox must bring a cow some grass, the grass some water, the water a jug, bring a maiden a blue bead, bring a peddler an egg, and bring a hen some grain in order to repay the old woman and have his tail sewn back on.
My Impression
This beautifully illustrated John Newbery Medal book is written like a nursery rhyme. My Pre-K class enjoyed the tale and tried to predict from page to page.

"The traditional cumulative tale features a fox who drinks a woman's jug of milk. So begins the adventures of his life. The old woman cuts off his tale and refuses to sew it back on until he replaces the milk. He pleads with the sea, a cow, a woman, a merchant, and others for help and each asks for a favor in return. At last, the miller starts the chain of events required to restore the milk. Children will surely join the chorus following each sequence of the story."
Use in Library
Because this book is an Armenian folktale, it could be used in a folktale unit. It also could be used as a journal prompt, asking students to write what might happen to the fox after his tail was sewn back on.
