Moldule 4: The Matchlock Gun

Bibliography
Edmonds, W. (1941). The Matchlock Gun. New York, NY: Dodd, Mead & Co.
Summary
Edward Van Alstyne is young Dutch boy, who, along with his father, Teunis, mother, Gertrude, and younger sister, Trudy, live in New York in 1757.  Indians are trying to overtake some landowners and Edward's father goes to help the militia when called to duty.  When Teunis leaves for a military assignment one day, Edward must step up to protect his mother and sister from an Indian attack.  Gertrude teaches Edward how to light the old matchlock gun that has been hanging on the wall.  Edward's bravery saves his mother and sister when Indians attack their home.
My Impression
I saw this book in filmstrip form years ago, so when I read it I felt that I had just seen it visually.  I like both the innocence of the time, but at the same time this young man had a grave responsibility.  I read that this author did extensive research and this book is full of historical facts, although it is a fictional creation.
Review
Booklist
"Here are plot summaries of two Newbery-winning historical novels, both published more than 45 years ago.  One, set in the Old West, a historical period with proven staying power, dramatizes the heroism of a young boy defending his mother and sister from an Indian attack. The book's author was known for conducting research using original sources and immersing himself in the periods about which he wrote."
Use in Library
This would be a fun book for students to re-enact the story in library class.  Could be used in conjunction with early American history unit.
